Irony

Today I had to buy a new phone for our apartment because ours broke and it's Mother's Day (Happy Mother's Day, Mom!) even though it was 10 at night. Not much is open that late at night (no 24 hour Wal-marts here). Luckily Carrefour is open till 10:30 so I quickly biked over there and bought the second cheapest phone they had. It looks just like the broken one but it's red! Cost 29RMB

On my way home, I remember that I was out of phone cards. Of the approximately 20 newsstands on the way back to my apartment, exactly one was open and being run by some old guy in his boxers who probably lived there but he did have phone cards to call the States. Cost: 40RMB for 40 minutes.

So tomorrow morning I will call my mom using a phone card that cost more than the phone. Crazy!
