Months of the Year by ESL Fifth Graders

A few weeks ago, I gave my fifth grade students a quiz on the months of the year. After a week and a half of practicing writing and spelling them correctly, most students did pretty well. Then there were the other students... They listed a few months that I had never heard of. Here are a few of my favorites:
Demestber
Januce
Junery
Sreatnber
Apurgly
Femanber
Never Year's Day (clearly months and holiday names can be confusing)
Febember
Febtermber
Junever
Derneyder
Jundary
Dematdayer
And my number one favorite: Zhoul (the Zh in Chinese is a similar sound to J)

The last question on the quiz was "This is the month right now". In class 9 sixteen out of forty students answered correctly. In class 10, things were even worse: only 7 students knew what month it was... And finally I understand it. If they don't even know what month it is, can I really expect them to know what their homework is and finish it?
